Let’s Help Animals was founded on a simple belief: no pet should face homelessness, overcrowded shelters, or preventable suffering because essential veterinary care was financially out of reach.
For founder Alia Henderson, this mission began long before the creation of the nonprofit. Growing up in a veterinary family, she spent her childhood watching her father, Dr. William J. Henderson, dedicate his life to caring for animals and the people who loved them. A veterinarian for more than five decades, Dr. Henderson built a reputation not only for his medical expertise, but for his compassion, generosity, and unwavering commitment to helping families keep their pets healthy.
Throughout his career, Dr. Henderson believed veterinary care should be accessible to everyone. He was known for helping families facing financial hardship, often finding ways to provide care when others could not. His kindness extended far beyond the walls of the clinic, leaving a lasting impact on countless pets, owners, and members of the community.
As Alia grew older, she witnessed both the rewards and challenges of animal welfare firsthand. She saw families who deeply loved their pets but struggled to afford preventive care. She saw how financial barriers often resulted in pets remaining unsterilized, contributing to unwanted litters, shelter overcrowding, and preventable animal homelessness throughout San Diego County.
After years of working alongside veterinary professionals and serving the community through affordable veterinary programs, Alia recognized that even reduced-cost services remained out of reach for many pet owners. She knew there had to be another way to help.
That vision became Let’s Help Animals, a nonprofit organization dedicated to removing financial barriers to care. Through donor support, community partnerships, and grant funding, we help qualifying families access affordable spay and neuter services through our veterinary partner, San Diego Affordable Spay & Neuter Clinic.
Today, Let’s Help Animals continues the legacy of compassion that inspired its founding. Our mission is to prevent pet homelessness before it starts, reduce shelter overcrowding, and help keep beloved pets healthy, housed, and with the families who love them.
Together, we are creating a future where fewer animals enter shelters simply because preventive care was financially out of reach.
